A spring classic—slightly mystical, utterly delicious, and perfect for a boreal martini!

When spring rhymes with crisp, wild, and flavorful
Just like asparagus peeking through the thawing soil, fiddleheads are making their grand return. If you're among those eagerly awaiting them, you already know how delightful these little fern shoots are. If not, stick around—we'll fill you in

What exactly are they?
The renowned ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris), also known as fiddlehead or fiddlehead fern, sprouts in May across Quebec's damp areas. Its taste? A blend of artichoke, asparagus, and pure joy.
The Spruce Eats

Fun fact: Beyond their deliciousness, they're rich in plant-based proteins, carotenoids, and antioxidants. Not too shabby.

How to identify them?
Before you venture into the boreal wilderness for foraging, here's what to look for:

✔️They grow in dense little clusters.
✔️Their coils are shiny (no fuzz!).
✔️The curved stem resembles a celery stalk.
✔️As they mature, they look like an ostrich feather.

Important:

Harvest 1 out of every 3: one for you, one for the plant, one for the animals.

And never eat them raw! Blanch them to eliminate toxins.

Kwe Tip: If you're unsure, leave the foraging to the pros. Better to savor than to suffer.
